About the exhibition

Organised by The Museum of Modern Art, Tim Burton was the first major museum retrospective of his work

Taking inspiration from popular culture, Tim Burton reinvented Hollywood genre filmmaking as an expression of personal vision, influencing a generation of artists working in film, video and graphics. This exhibition traced his visual imagination from early childhood drawings through his mature work in film.
It brought together more than seven hundred rarely or never-before-seen drawings, paintings, photographs, moving-image works, concept art, storyboards, puppets, maquettes, costumes and cinematic ephemera from films including Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman, Mars Attacks!, Ed Wood and Beetlejuice, alongside little-known personal projects. The gallery show was accompanied by a complete retrospective of his features and shorts, and an illustrated publication.

Organised by The Museum of Modern Art’s Ron Magliozzi, Assistant Curator, and Jenny He, Curatorial Assistant, Department of Film, with Rajendra Roy, The Celeste Bartos Chief Curator of Film.-
